Local Rotarians Welcome Rotary International President from Scotland

Scottish Judge and President of Rotary International John Kenny was
recently welcomed to the United States by local Rotarians Sarah
O'Connell (Millbrook Club) and Judge Jonah Triebwasser (Red Hook
Club). Judge Kenny will appear on the Radio Rotary program hosted by
O'Connell and Triebwasser on December 4th. Radio Rotary can be heard

Rotary Youth Attend UN Conference

Red Hook Rotary Receives District Award
  • Past District Governor Jeffrey Keahon (2008-2009) presented President Walter Avis, the Club President, with a Recognition Certificate for accomplishing the Club’s objective for increasing    Club Membership, Polio Plus contributions and Annual Giving to     the Rotary Foundation. Red Hook Rotary was one of the 6 out of      66 Clubs in the District that accomplished all three goals for the   2008-2009 Rotary year..

    Red Hook resident Victor Behoriam won a Wii video game in a recent
    raffle to support the Red Hook Rotary Foundation. The Foundation is
    the charitable arm of the Red Hook Rotary Club.

    Interact presents scoreboard at the Rec Park

    Members of the Interact Club of Red Hook, NY gathered recently for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Red Hook Rec Park.  The Interact Club raised funds through various events to purchase a baseball scoreboard for the Rec Park.  The ball field where the scoreboard was installed is used by Red Hook High School’s Boys Varsity Baseball team.  Pictured with the Interact Club members is Ben Tiedtke owner of Village Pizza in Red Hook.  Ben sponsored two fundraisers at his restaurant which contributed a significant amount to the project. 

     Interact is an international community service organization for high school age students.  Interact is part of Rotary International.  The local club is sponsored by Rotary Club of Red Hook, NY.  Rotary and Interact have a primary objective of promoting world peace and understanding through service to the community.

    The Red Hook Rotary honored Robert Bowman as Citizen of the Year for 2008 at their recent gala dinner attended by over 160 neighbors, family and friends. Mr. Bowman has served Red Hook as Town Supervisor, Village of Red Hook Mayor, Red Hook school board president, Northern Dutchess Hospital Board, Dutchess County Fair Board and a 50-year community volunteer.

     


    Congratulations to our club for being recognized at the District Foundation Dinner.

    We are in the 100 club (our members who donated averaged $100 or more in donations) and were the highest donating club in our district! Thanks go to our Foundation chairs for the past two years John Kennedy and Bruce Martin.

    Thanks also to Arnold and Alice Colburn and Steve and Gidget Kress for attending the dinner.

     


    The Red Hook Rotary has welcomed its exchange student of the 2008 - 2009 school year.

    Andreas Csorgo of Austria will attend Red Hook High School, living with local families and touring the United States.

    Rotary Celebrates New York's 400th
     

    The Red Hook Rotary began the celebration of New York's Quadricentennial (the  400th anniversary of Hudson and Champlain's voyages along the river and lake that bear their names) by hearing from Red Hook resident Tara Sullivan,  Executive Director of the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission. Ms. Sullivan told Rotarians about the many events that will take during the celebration in 2009.

    Rotary East Meets Rotary West

    Red Hook Rotary President Judge Jonah Triebwasser was the recent guest of honor and keynote speaker at the Nor'Wester Rotary Club in Port Angeles, Washington. Judge Triebwasser spoke about the history of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's fight against polio and Rotary's campaign to wipe out the last vestiges of polio around the world.

    Rotary Goes to the Dogs (and Cats!)


    Red Hook Rotary heard about the services of the Dutchess County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as the SPCA's executive director, Joyce Garrity, described the outreach to adopt stray cats and dogs.

    Rotary says Auf Wiedersehen to Exchange Student

    Red Hook Rotary has bid farewell to its German exchange student Lena Moerchen. While spending a year in Red Hook, she attended Red Hook High School, toured around New York and learned about American culture. She holds the record for seeing New York City- 12 visits.

    Radio Rotary Takes to the Air
     
    Members of the Red Hook Rotary recently appeared on the WHVW Radio Rotary program to discuss such upcoming events as the Rotary Youth Wrestling Tournament, Apple Blossom Day and Hardscrabble Day. Radio Rotary can be heard every Friday from Noon to 12:30 pm on WHVW 950 on the AM dial, or at the Rotary website <http://www.rotarydistrict7210.org/>.

    Lena Moerchen, the Club’s Rotary Foreign Student from Germany, at a recent meeting presented a power point presentation about Germany, German cities, her home town and school, her family, her interest in the school orchestra and typical day’s activity when she is home in Germany.


    Red Hook Rotary Welcomes Home New Zealand Exchange
     
     
     
    Professional Massage therapist Helen Gutfreund spoke at a recent breakfast meeting of the Red Hook Rotary about her recent Rotary-sponsored trip to New Zealand. Her trip was part Rotary International's Group Study Exchange program which sends young professionals abroad for four to six weeks to live and learn with professionals in their host country. The Group Study Exchange program gives participants the chance to enrich themselves both academically and culturally and the chance to promote international goodwill throughout the global community.

    Village Pizza Supports Rotary Youth

    Red Hook's Village Pizza is supporting the fundraising efforts of the Red Hook Rotary Youth Interact group to install a sports scoreboard at the Red Hook Rec Park. Village Pizza donated a percentage of their sales on the Red Hook Interact Day toward the cost of the scoreboard.
     
    The next Interact Scoreboard Day at Village Pizza, North Broadway, Red Hook, will be Thursday, February 21, 2008, between 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. when once again a percentage of every sale will be donated to the scoreboard fund. Shown in the photograph from left to right are Village Pizza proprietor Ben Tiedtke presenting a check to Interact member Emma Dowden while Rotarian and Interact Advisor Carl Dowden looks on.

    OPERATION LIFESAVER

    A recent program was presented by Operation Lifesaver representatives which concerned railroad public safety concerns. This program topics relating to safety and loss of life at grade crossings, on railroad right-of-way, objects put on the rails, defacing warning signs and vandalism. It was also explained that railroad accident deaths have decreased by 50% since 1972 due in part to “Operation Lifesaver”.

    Triebwasser shared with the Irish Rotarians and the English Clubs ideas about various
    community service projects that the Red Hook club has successfully

    Harold Fell Named Honorary Rotarian


    The Red Hook Rotary has recognized long time community volunteer Harold Fell with an honorary membership. Harold has been instrumental in creating benches and a stage for Abrahams Park as well as the care of Veterans' graves, flag poles and monuments. At the same time that Harold was presented his honorary membership, the Rotary gave Harold a check for $500.00 to help pay of the stage.     Rotary Welcomes Heart Safe Club

     
     
    Representatives of the Heart Safe Club of Rhinebeck recently addressed members of the Red Hook Rotary on the importance of learning Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and heart screening for teenagers. The Heart Safe Club is offering home CPR training kits to the public as well as CPR training. For information, contact them at heartsafeclub@frontiernet.net .     The Club members elected Jonah Triebwasser (left) and  John Kennedy (right).

    President Bud Weaver presented the Club’s Rotarian of the Year plaques to John Kennedy and Jonah Triebwasser to acknowledge their exceptional service to the Club. Mr. Kennedy is the Rotary Treasurer and local representative of the Rotary International Foundation. Jonah Triebwasser is Vice President of Rotary and has been active as Rotary's publicity liaison. Both Kennedy and Triebwasser have been very active on several Rotary committees and projects. Rotary president Bernard Weaver said both men exemplify the Rotary motto of "service above self."

    Rotary Hear of Hospital Achievements

    Mr. Robert Grehms the new manager of the Dutchess County Fair; spoke to the Red Hook Rotary, at a recent breakfast meeting at the Red Hook Inn, about the future plans for the Dutchess County Fair and use of the fairgrounds.
